Playtime Casino Wasaga Beach and the AGCO

A regulated online gambling market has operated in Ontario since April 4, 2022, and a public list shows which sites are legal. Here you will find how that market works, along with the way this guide's home page handles its paid links.

How Ontario's online market works

The province's regulated online gambling market launched on April 4, 2022. When private operators offer it, iGaming Ontario runs its conduct and management, and the AGCO regulates it. For a private online casino, the rule is plain. Ontario accepts it only after two steps: the AGCO registers it, and iGaming Ontario signs an operating agreement with it. Neither one is enough by itself.

OLG.ca is the other piece of the picture. It is Ontario's government-run online casino, not one of the private operators. So when a private online casino says it is legal in Ontario, registration plus an agreement is what that should mean. A slick homepage proves neither one.

Checking a site before you play

For regulated online gambling sites, the official list lives at igamingontario.ca, in the iGaming Ontario directory. Before you play anywhere, look the site up there. You have to be 19 or over, and physically inside Ontario for the whole time you play.

Run by iGaming Ontario, BetGuard (betguard.ca) allows anyone aged 19 or older to self-exclude from every regulated Ontario online site in one go, OLG.ca included. It stops at the screen, though: land-based casinos are not covered. For those, My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program for Ontario casinos, applies. Breaks of 3 months, 6 months and 1 to 5 years shut you out of all Ontario casinos, none ending early. Staff at a casino can take your request, or the OLG Support Centre can sign you up at 1-800-387-0098.

How this guide gets paid

Paid links show up on this guide's home page alone, each marked Ad: menu, below the first screen, close to the end. Every one of them leads to a partner operating a private online casino. That partner stays unnamed here and may be swapped. The guide earns a commission on those links.

The guide does not check that partner, so check any online casino against the official directory described above before you play. That partner has no connection with the venue on Joseph Drive, its operator or the provincial lottery corporation. Links to the venue, the town, the province, the lottery corporation and help services are never paid.

Who writes this guide, and where the pictures come from

This guide is written by the Joseph Drive desk, and every picture of its young woman comes from an image generator. She is an invented character who does not work for the casino, does not write here and is never shown playing. Two of her scenes, in a booth of the MATCH pub and outside the entrance, were generated from real casino photographs. So they show the real place without being photographs, while her beach, bus shelter and picnic table scenes show none of it. The one real photograph, the casino building at dusk, is by Transportfan70, released under CC0 on Wikimedia Commons.

Quick questions

What tells you that an online casino in Ontario is legal?

Find the site at igamingontario.ca, in the iGaming Ontario directory, which officially lists the regulated sites for online gambling. A private site must also carry AGCO registration, along with an operating agreement that ties it to iGaming Ontario.

Can a summer visitor from outside Ontario play online in Wasaga Beach?

Yes, as long as you are at least 19 and actually inside Ontario during play. Check the site in the iGaming Ontario directory before you start.

Does BetGuard cover the casino on Joseph Drive?

No, BetGuard covers each regulated Ontario site for online gambling, OLG.ca too, but land-based casinos are never part of it. For the casino on Joseph Drive and every other Ontario casino, OLG's My PlayBreak self-exclusion program applies. Enrolling is done through casino staff, or by dialling 1-800-387-0098 to reach the OLG Support Centre.
